ATOMIC WALLET HACKED - INVESTOR FUNDS MISSEN 7th of June , 2023
On June 3, 2023, several Atomic Wallet users' account were hacked and funds worth over $35 million in bitcoin and other crypto assets were stolen and transfered using a crypto mixer. A crypto mixer is a service which provide anonymous transfer of bitcoin or cryptocurrency to another wallet address with the sole aim of keeping no digital trace of such transaction in the blockchain. Legitimate people use crypto mixer to keep their identity and transaction anonymous whereas fraudulent people use it to steal fund with no digital trace. The funds were traced to a mixer called sinbad.io by Elliptic. The mixer are linked to the nefarious Lazarus Group of North Korea. This crypto mixer is similar to blender.io which was the first crypto mixer banned by the United States (U.S).
However, within 48 hours after the atomic wallet digital assets worth over $35 million were robbed from users of the Atomic Wallet, the decentralized wallet team has claimed in a tweet on June 4 that “1% of monthly active users have been affected/reported" and that some of the looted funds have been recovered.( i.e the onchain sleuth Zachxbt tweeted that he helped in recovering $1 million for a victims). Zachxbt stated that the “Largest single victim I have observed is for 2.8M USDT".
Bitcoin users are strongly reminded that even thought some decentralized digital wallet seems to look safe, it's highly recommended to store your digital assets in a truly safe and secure place.
